Empowering Change: Sean Miele's Journey from Patient to Occupational Therapy Advocate

In a transformative blend of past experiences and future aspirations, Sean Miele, an Occupational Therapy student at Seton Hall, is setting remarkable precedents in his field. From patient to a leading advocate, Miele’s journey is defined by a commitment to equal access and innovative approaches to therapy.

The Beginnings of a Purpose-Driven Path

Sean Miele’s path to occupational therapy was rooted in personal experience, shaped during his childhood when occupational therapy became a guiding beacon for him. His time as an undergraduate at Monmouth University saw him wearing multiple hats—volunteering as an emergency medical technician and working as a medical technologist. Yet, he yearned for a career with more direct impact.

Recounting his early struggles, Miele recalls, “I needed occupational therapy for multiple issues, including shoe-tying and emotional regulation. This therapy molded me into a highly functioning, independent person.”

Promoting Inclusivity Through Karate

As part of the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program, Miele spearheaded an initiative demonstrating his passion for inclusive exercise programs. Collaborating with a special needs community in Warren, New Jersey, Miele helped design a karate-based fitness program tailored for adults with disabilities. Through research and personalized modifications, the program became a unique blend of movement and wellness.

“People with disabilities require the same exercise opportunities as everyone else,” Miele expressed. “Through karate, we are creating fun and safe ways to encourage physical activity.”

Conferences and Presentations: A Platform for Advocacy

Growing in his professional role, Sean Miele took a bold step by presenting research at the New Jersey Occupational Therapy Association’s annual conference. His presentation underscored the crucial role of physical activity for those with developmental disabilities and highlighted the collaborative efforts of his peers.

Miele’s involvement didn’t go unnoticed. LaMar Bolden, Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy, lauded his dedication, noting how his presence at association events fueled his aspirations to contribute meaningfully to the field.

Looking Toward a Bright Future

As Miele approaches graduation, his sights are set on the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy exam, with dreams of pioneering cognitive rehabilitation. Inspired by fieldwork experiences with brain injury patients, Miele plans to focus on rehabilitation settings that stress broader occupational goals, including home management and financial planning.

Long-term, Miele envisions a multifaceted clinic and a nonprofit organization to revolutionize access to occupational therapy services, echoing his professor’s advisement to bring bold ideas to his profession.

Sean Miele’s story is a resounding reminder of how personal experiences fuel professional pursuits, creating ripples of change in communities and reshaping the future of occupational therapy.

According to Seton Hall University, this journey showcases the powerful blend of personal experience and professional ambition, inspiring others in the field of occupational therapy.
