Homies Unidos: Paving a New Path for Denver Youth Through Peace and Mental Health
In the vibrant city of Denver, a quiet revolution is taking place. For the past decade, Homies Unidos has been a beacon of hope, challenging the city’s youth to envision a world free from violence and full of opportunity. This organization tackles the root causes of gang violence, encouraging a positive community ethos and creative expression, a belief shared by many youth across metro Denver.
Listening to Voices of Change
Greg Rodriguez, who now studies audio engineering at the Community College of Denver, is a testament to Homies’ impact. He has taken up a leadership role with an environmental group, working to preserve local parks and creeks. “We go around the parks, we clean the trash, we go around the creekway, we make sure they’re clean,” Rodriguez shared. He attributes his journey of transformation to the guidance and mission of Homies Unidos.
Leadership Rooted in Experience
Led by Executive Director Gerardo Lopez, who himself emerged from a similar path, Homies Unidos offers a compelling model for change. “These kids experience trauma, whether it’s shootings or violence,” Lopez said. “We tackle those issues and create a safe environment.” This safe space is pivotal in allowing youths to confront and understand their emotions, fostering empathy and reducing the likelihood of harm to others.
Promoting Mental Health and Understanding
Central to Homies Unidos’ efforts is mental health awareness. Young people learn to navigate their emotions, aiding in personal healing and providing a ripple effect within their families and communities. “When youth talk about mental health, healing, and trauma, they help their families too,” said Lorez Meinhold, Executive Director of the Caring for Denver Foundation, which funds these mental health initiatives.
Embracing New Horizons
The Homies Unidos offices are a hub of exploration, granting youth access to tools like virtual reality to broaden their horizons. Greg Rodriguez has found solace and expression in the studio, crafting podcasts that resonate with his peers. He reflects, “I used to view situations as having only one way in and out. Now, I explore and see which options are best.”
Building Skills and Character
Each year, around a couple of hundred young individuals benefit from Homies Unidos’ programs, which span more than a dozen schools. The focus is on building resilience, providing the skills needed to manage adversity, and empowering students to forge a path grounded in character and dedication.

On Thursday, May 15, CBS Colorado will pay homage to Mental Health Action Day, shining a spotlight on those dedicated to fostering emotional well-being in their communities.
