Penn State Health's Stellar Success in Drug Take-Back Initiative!

Fall Drug Take-Back Day was more than just an event; it was a resounding success for the staff at Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center. They gathered an impressive haul of unwanted, unneeded, or expired medications, filling 20.5 large sharps containers for safe disposal during this vital community initiative.

Record-Breaking Collection

On October 25, Penn State Health marked another milestone by collecting 702 pounds of medications, exceeding last spring’s numbers by over 100 pounds. This haul, the highest since the fall 2020 event, signified a community committed to the responsible disposal of medications. According to Penn State Health News, similar events were held across the United States, emphasizing the importance of safe disposal, with a notable collection of 286 tons nationwide!

Locations Taking the Lead

The health system coordinated this event with local law enforcement at seven crucial locations, including the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey and Lancaster medical centers, among others across the region. Staff worked tirelessly in collaboration with police departments from areas like North Londonderry and East Hempfield townships to ensure the medications and sharps were collected safely.

A Legacy of Safety and Responsibility

Since joining the twice-a-year Drug Take-Back Day in 2015, Penn State Health has demonstrated unwavering commitment, having now collected nearly 8,000 pounds of unwanted and expired medications along with over 320 large sharps containers brimming with used needles and syringes.

Facilitating Ongoing Efforts

Milton S. Hershey Medical Center takes the practice further by offering permanent drug return boxes since 2019. In partnership with the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office, these accessible boxes cater to the community’s needs at strategic locations throughout the campus, available during regular business hours.

Continuous Commitment to Community Health

Preventing substance misuse is more than an initiative at Penn State Health; it’s a priority. By aligning efforts with mental health needs, the institution remains at the forefront of community service, striving for a healthier, safer society.
