In a bold new initiative, the University of California, Santa Cruz, has launched a revolutionary international collaboration that promises to dismantle cost and geographic barriers in scientific research. This unprecedented collaboration opens the state-of-the-art Biomolecular cryoEM Facility to scientists worldwide, including those from underserved regions, dramatically enhancing the potential to unlock health-related discoveries.

A Gateway to Advanced Research

Since its inception in 2022, UC Santa Cruz’s cryo-EM facility has been at the forefront of biological research, solving 37 complex structures and significantly contributing to understanding diseases like influenza and RSV. This has already led to 13 crucial publications, setting new directions for vaccine advancement.

Now, with funding from the National Institutes of Health, the facility has expanded to include a cutting-edge electron microscope and camera, ensuring it’s equipped for groundbreaking discoveries. Accessible to international institutions and bolstered by collaborations with U.S. partners, this initiative signals a new era in international scientific cooperation, breaking age-old cost constraints.

A Model for Inclusive Structural Biology

By partnering with entities such as the University of Cape Town and Florida International University, UC Santa Cruz has crafted a model of shared scientific infrastructure. This arrangement ensures scientists from diverse backgrounds and locations can contribute to and benefit from cutting-edge research, truly democratizing access to advanced technology.

“This project shatters long-standing barriers,” commented Jeffrey Weekley, director of research IT. “Our goal is to empower researchers in Africa and other underserved regions, facilitating their participation in pioneering data collection and analysis.”

UC Santa Cruz’s model, where users are charged on a cost-recovery basis, not only sustains the facility’s operations but also broadens its impact significantly. Vitor Hugo Balasco Serrão, the facility manager, secured major funding to roll out training workshops, ensuring the facility’s knowledge and resources are extended globally.

“This innovative global partnership is just beginning,” said Bryan Gaensler, Science Division Dean. “Our facilities, and creative approaches like these, multiply their impact, reaching scientists across the world.”

Accelerating Discoveries, One Electron at a Time

Standing as one of only 230 facilities worldwide, UC Santa Cruz’s cryo-EM infrastructure represents a beacon of research potential. The technology enables the full spectrum of research processes, from preparation to high-resolution data acquisition and analysis, spearheading numerous scientific breakthroughs.

In a testament to its capability, the facility’s prowess in Cryo-EM has already illuminated 37 biological structures since 2022. With partners like Jeremy Woodward from the University of Cape Town, these initiatives drive forward critical research into areas like HIV vaccine development.

“This international endeavor bridges gaps and accelerates discovery,” Woodward notes. “By extending cryo-EM technologies to African scientists, we unlock insights essential for developing new vaccines and medicines.”
