In a groundbreaking move, UCHealth has opened a state-of-the-art inpatient mental health unit in Northern Colorado. Nestled within Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, this innovative facility promises to transform mental healthcare delivery in the region. As of Monday at 7 a.m., the first patient stepped into what can only be described as a beacon of hope and healing.

Previously, patients needing urgent behavioral health support faced logistical challenges, often relying on ambulances for critical hospital transfers. Now, with this new wing directly connected to PVH, access to comprehensive healthcare has never been swifter. “Our patients have had to take ambulances,” shared Daphne Huegerich, UCHealth’s director of behavioral health for Northern Colorado. This integration ensures immediate access to various medical services, a true game-changer for both patients and healthcare professionals.
Expansion and Capacity
The facility marks an increase in capacity, offering 50 beds across three units: Acute, Adolescents, and Adult, as articulated by Huegerich. “This unit increases accessibility to hospital lists, pharmacists, lab individuals,” she explained, highlighting the holistic care approach embedded in the new unit’s design.

According to CBS News, UCHealth’s commitment to safety is evident throughout the facility. Rounded countertop edges, heavy furnishings, and strategically designed bathrooms all contribute to an environment focused on preventing self-harm. The unit’s layout eliminates blind spots, allowing staff to maintain clear visibility, while unique room door hinges ensure swift access in emergencies.
