USF Health's International Collaboration Revolutionizes Health Education
On November 12, a remarkable event unfolded at the University of South Florida Marshall Student Center, where more than 1,200 individuals gathered both physically and virtually to celebrate the 8th Interprofessional Education (IPE) Day, hosted by USF Health in collaboration with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). This year’s event marked a significant milestone by bridging international borders to unite future health care pioneers in a shared mission of solving real-world health challenges through synergy and communication.
A Vision Beyond Borders
The day began with a powerful message from Dr. Haru Okuda, CEO of the USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation, who emphasized the day’s core essence of “connection, curiosity, and shared purpose.” The event’s transcendent theme was clear: health challenges are global, and addressing them requires an interdisciplinary approach that crosses geographic boundaries.

A distinguished panel comprising experts from USF, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and UNAM set the tone with a discussion on effective teamwork and communication, illustrating the essential skills needed in modern health care environments. A Challenging Research Competition
Innovation was at the heart of the interprofessional research competition, sponsored by Tampa General Hospital. More than 100 students from USF Health’s diverse programs formed 12 interdisciplinary teams to address global health topics such as diabetes and food insecurity. These teams competed in a high-stakes, PechaKucha format, with one team emerging victorious for their comprehensive plan to combat Type 2 diabetes amid food insecurity in Tampa.
Learning Across Borders
The event was a revelation for many students, like first-year undergraduate Summer Anne De Jesus, who discovered the value of embracing diverse viewpoints in research. Dr. Ana Carolina Sepúlveda Vildósola, dean of medicine at UNAM, echoed the day’s success by highlighting the event as a testament to what can be achieved when institutions unite for a common purpose: sharing knowledge without barriers and confronting global health challenges with respect and integration of various expertise.
